In Figure A is shown an individual, fan-shaped, leaf-like segment (flabellum) of the fruiting body. The surface is smooth on both sides and has horizontal bands. The surface of each flabellum is covered by a layer of basidia. Each basidium (B) bears four basidiospores on slender sterigmata, only three of which are visible in the photo. The basidiospores (C) are broadly ovoid, colorless, and 6-7.5 X 4.5 - 5.5 µm in size, with a smooth surface.

Other names: This species has often been called Sparassis radicata and S. herbstii, and confused with S. crispa, a more western species.
