Georgia Plant Science Scholars

Class of 2000

Georgia Plant Science Scholars for the year 2000 was a great success. We had the opportunity to meet some wonderful students and introduce them to the world of Plant Science. Departments hosting the event were Botany, Crop & Soil Science, Horticulture, and Plant Pathology. Below are some pictures of the two day event.

Students arrived about 10:00 AM July 17th. After a brief welcome and introduction the students were given a tour of campus courtesy of the UGA Visitors Center. Following the tour, the students took a lunch break with some of the faculty and staff at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Activity Center.

Students spent the afternoon touring various places around campus and through Athens. First stop was Sanford Stadium. Dr. Ed Brown and Ray McEwen provided the tour through the stadium, complete with a brief history of the stadium and the science behind the turf. Students also had the opportunity to visit the memorial site of the UGA mascots.

Next stop on the tour was the Botany Greenhouses. Andy Tull conducted a tour through the greenhouses showing students everything from tropical plants to common agricultural crops.

The students were given a tour through the Georgia State Botanical Gardens by Kari Whitley (Plant Pathology) and Jeff Adkins (Horticulture). Talks were given throughout the International Gardens and Herb Gardens. The students were taken on a 30 minute hike along the trails to view the river and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Following the tour of the Botanical Gardens, students visited the Hort Farm (one of many research farms owned by UGA). While on the farm students learned a little about blueberry production while getting to sample some of the blueberries. They also got the opportunity to check out a small trial area for different landscaping plants.

Upon returning to the campus, students visited the Hort Trial Gardens (Betty Johnson Horticultural Gardens). The gardens have been in existence since 1983, and presently over 600 taxa of annual and perennial plants are evaluated in the Horticulture Gardens. The primary functions of the garden are research and teaching, and detailed information on all taxa is provided to all who are interested.

After some free time in the dorm, the students spent part of the evening eating dinner in one of the many dining halls on campus. Faculty, staff and graduate students of all the departments involved joined the students at Snelling Dining Hall.

That night students were treated to a special social held in their honor. Ice cream and sundae toppings were available. The highlight of the social was the entertainment provided by Dr. Albert Culbreath (Plant Pathology, Tifton). He shared songs, poems, and stories that kept the crowd laughing throughout the social.

The dorm chaperones (Anita Castro, Veronica Jarrin, Dan Singleton, and Lee Miller) escorted the students back to the dorms for the night.

The next day started with breakfast at the Plant Pathology Conference Room. Tours throughout all the departments followed. Each department took time to teach the students a little about their particular department. Students learned to propagate plants in Horticulture, they visited an herbarium in Botany and participated in conducting common tests in Crop & Soil Sciences. Below are pictures taken while the students visited Plant Pathology. While visiting Plant Pathology students had the opportunity to meet scientists who worked with particular plant pathogens.

Following the tours students met up with their parents, industry reps, and faculty/staff/students for a lunch of slow roasted chicken prepared by the Poultry Science Department. Industry reps took the time to speak about careers available to the students in the world of plant science.

Representatives from Financial Aid and Admissions spoke to students and parents.

Following the talks each student was awarded a certificate of achievement by Dr. Knauft (Assoc. Dean of Academic Affairs CAES) and Dr. Broder (Assist. Dean of Academic Affairs CAES). Gifts from each deparment were also given out at this time. The Athletic Department, thanks to the kindness of Coach Vince Dooley had supplied some gifts to the students as well.

So Congratulations to Our First Class of Georgia Plant Science Scholars!!!!!
