Nematodes and Plant diseases

Nematodes and Needham (1743)

Needham, an English scientist, associated nematodes with plant disease, but he did not show or suggest that nematodes actually caused a plant disease.

Nematodes cause Root Galls (1855)

Nematodes are found in root galls on cucumber. The nematode observed was the root knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp. Over the next four years two other plant parasitic nematodes were reported from infected plant parts. These were the bulb and stem nematode and sugarbeet cyst nematode.
