Forced Erradication of Barberry Plants
(Mid-1600's & Early 1700's)
In
the mid 1600's French farmers noted that wheat rust was worse when wheat was
growing near barberry bushes. In the early 1700's Conneticut farmers also
made the same observations. However the farmers thought that barberry fathered
the rust which then moved to wheat. Farmers requested legislation to force
the eradication of barberry in oder to protect wheat plants from rust.
